Laboratory for Social Research in the Media

The Laboratory for Social Research in the Media was established in 2002.

Its research interests are focused on political, social, economic and legal dimensions of Press, Radio, Television and the Internet.

The Laboratory focuses particularly on social research on the use of the internet, personal computers, multimedia, satellite and digital television and the new communication technologies in general.

  • Political Communication and electoral campaigns’ research
  • Research on the public image of politicians and institutions
  • Research on the presentation of individuals and institutions in the internet
  • Research on the structure and administration of media institutions
  • Analysis of various media organizations and their public image (specific radio and TV stations, newspapers, magazines etc.)
  • Research on the media politics and media content production
  • Public relations and advertisement of media organizations
  • Content and discourse analysis, both quantitative and qualitative, of news bulletins and journalistic broadcasts
  • Content and discourse analysis, both quantitative and qualitative, of entertainment and sport broadcasts
  • Content and discourse analysis, both quantitative and qualitative, of advertisements
  • Quantitative and qualitative audience research. Among  others:
    • Quantitative and qualitative audience research concerning specific programs and content genres (news bulletins, entertainment, sports, advertisement etc.)
    • Quantitative and qualitative audience research concerning specific programs and content genres of specific media organizations (channels)

Members of the Laboratory for Social Research in the Media are the teaching and research staff of the Social and Political Analysis of Communication Section of the Faculty of Communications and Media Studies of the University of Athens.

Associated to the Laboratory are members of the other sectors of the Faculty of Communications and Media Studies, experienced professionals, whose knowledge and expertise coincides with the Lab’s research projects, as well as post- graduate students.

The members of the Laboratory for Social Research in the Media are distinguished by their extensive and rich research experience as a result of the various research projects they have conducted either for the University of Athens or for other research institutions.
